Patrice worked furiously on her paper the whole day, even going so far as to skip lunch and meriendaâsomething that shocked Gia, who often found Patrice with a piece of bread or hopia stuck in her mouth. Not even the din and crash of Aleli's band practicing in the patio could rouse her from her work.
But soon her stomach won over and, after surpassing the ten-page mark on her paper, she saved her work on Gia's laptop and reluctantly went downstairs for dinner.
"Hey there, Miss Studious," said Aleli, who was sitting on the kitchen sink and eating chichacorn out of a small plastic bag.
"Hey," mumbled Patrice, who just discovered with despair that all that was left of the night's menudo dinner was tomato sauce, bits of potato and carrot and a few sad pieces of liver. She spooned this sad mulch over a bowl of rice, ignoring the protests of her stomach at the meager meal.
"So serious!" said Aleli. "Why don't you join us outside? We're just packing up. It's super hot in here anyway."
Patrice's back was indeed moist with the stifling humidity in the kitchen, and the thought of the breezy patioâwhere Lars waitedâseemed like a good idea. I can stay for five minutes only, she told herself. That paper will not finish itself.
She followed Aleli out the door, where she found Pam packing up and Deenie cross-legged on the floor, oblivious to the tiny shorts riding up her crotch, staring raptly as Lars twirled drumsticks in front of her.
"Hi!" Lars greeted as soon as he noticed Patrice. "I was hoping to see you here."
"Hey, Patrice!" trilled Deenie. "You missed their set. It was awesome!"
"Deenie, we were just practicing," said Pam. "You're so exagge."
"But you guys are so good!" Deenie was practically quivering with excitement.
"Hey, Lars," Patrice smiled despite her exhaustion. "Can't stay. It's been a long day. I have this monster paper to do." And then, "No thanks to that ex-friend of yours."
"What did he do?" he asked, helping Pam stow equipment away.
"Nothing unexpected." She stifled a huge yawn.
"Whoa," said Pam. "Careful or you'll unhinge your jaw, woman."
"I'm just so exhausted. And I still have five more pages to do!"
"Why don't you take a break?" smiled Lars. "Have a beer. On me." He placed his arm around her and began maneuvering her to the gate.
"That's a first," said Aleli, with a snort. "You never buy Pam and me a drink."
"That's 'cause you two are tomadors," he said, pulling Patrice. "I'd go broke in an hour!"
"Lars," Patrice protested, wriggling away from him. "I can't go."
"Of course you can," he smiled, pulling her once again. "Come on!"
"No. Lars," she said, this time more forcefully. "I need to finish my paper tonight so I can pass it to Nadia tomorrow morning because I'm missing her class on Wednesdayâ"
"Come on Patrice, it's just one beer," he said, squeezing her against him. "Live a little. Let your hair down."
Although she did feel a slight flush of pleasure when he tugged her ponytail, she had to decline.
